Thank you! I needed to read this, especially today. I have two children with autism who have needs that vary greatly from each other, and it is hard for many people to understand that one needs certain interventions and routines while the other needs something entirely different.

Thank you so much for this article. I always thought I was doing things right with my son when we would go on outings but now I see that I wasn't doing the right thing. I use to take him to the store and if he started having a meltdown we would leave and I wouldn't take him back to that store for a very long time due to the fear of embarrassment. Now that I have these tools I think that meltdowns will now come far and between instead of every time we are out. Thank you so much.

This is very helpful for me. My son will be 3 next month and we're just starting to introduce potty training. No pressure and it'll be a slow process led by him. We'll definitely try the counting, music and fidget toys. I have noticed he doesn't like the hard seat so we bought a soft seat for the big toilet but he likes the potty chair in the living room better. So we'll see what happens. He does have anxiety and some sensory issues we're waiting for an evaluation. These tips are helpful and greatly appreciated!

Hi
Loved your pickey eaters section , very informative and can totally relate
My son was diagnosed with SPD
Meal time has been so challenging , even beginning at 7 month mark. We see an ot and pt for last 2 years, he is doing better with increasing his food preferences but then he will boycott some of the things he used to eat.

We are struggling now with him only liking to eat certain foods in certain locations
He has convinced himself he eats breakfast a yougert or banana depending on day at home
A grilled cheese he will tolerate at one of his 2 favorite restaurants but at home won't touch ? Is very sensitive to smells as well. Family parties never sits for meals. It's heartbreaking
I have tried desperately in the past just to get him to eat sometimes I will pull out the iPad or my phone just to distract him to get him to eat, now it's expected if we are out to dinner
I feel I now have added to this control of food preferences and meal time dilemma
Please advise

CSW and Kim, I am glad that you are both going to try some of these strategies again. Practice makes perfect. Also, sometimes when a technique is used, your child may not be ready for it. So, revisiting different ideas is great to really figure out what works best. Thank you for posting. Have a great week!
